2008 was the first time, that the OHS was represented with three contributions at the "Jugend forscht" country contest.
Two of the contributions represented the basic research of the BCSI-team in their search for antiviral activitiy in phytoextracts.
The third engaged a mathematical problem for better orientation in a four dimensonal space.

Besides the third prize for finding a new mothod to effectively purify phytoextractes, the OHS receipt the hessian school award for outstanding scientific engagement..

Merck Darmstadt temporarily provides HPLC System for the BCSI-project

Wahlalternative

061213_hplc_002.jpgMerck Darmstadt temporally lent the BCSI-team an about 25.000€ expensive HPLC-System.
With this technology we are able to split different plant extracts to their single compounds and analyze them within as an Influenza A Neuraminidase Inhibitor.
The "High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)" is one of the best methods to split complex mixtures of substances into their single compounds.
As well, the co-operation with Merck Darmstadt has been enhanced.

With the assistance of Dr. Jansen from the Merck-School facilitation, the Otto-Hahn-School already received extensive laboratory equipment and materials by Merck Darmstadt for this project early this year.

With the development of a network between industry, science-laboratories, universities and schools we will encourage talented junior scientists at the Otto-Hahn-School.
During and after the Christmas vacation we’ll split our previous produced plant extracts by the HPLC-System.

First results are expected for January 2007.

BCSI - team wants you!

Wahlalternative

eu.jpgScience is international!

Cooperation with other German, European or international highschools, colleges or research-teams can draw more interest to scientific education at school.

Not only that an active scientific exchange of ideas can take place, no - also common handling other languages is thereby an important beginning.

For this reason we will initiate a network between German, European and international schools and research institutes.
Our primary goal: Scientific co-operation in a common project

We already established technical conditions like german/english translation of the project website and an internal communication link with video-transmission.

Young Scientists visit Biocenter of JWG University Frankfurt

Wahlalternative

biozentrum.jpgWhat a day!
Prof. Dr. Ludwig from the department biochemistry at the biocenter of the JWG University Frankfurt already invited us to visit the biochemical department.
Today, on 7.12.06 we got the chance to get some insigts into university science and teaching.
After 40 minutes by train from Hanau Wilhemsbad to Niederursel and a short way up we arrived the Bio-Centrum..
And after a cordial greeting by Prof. Dr. Ludwig we participated on a reading about “Basics of biochemical transcription of DNA“.
In opposition to the school-lessons the reading is pontificated, also means the students listen, view pictures and make notes – No questions, no repeats, no explanation. The students have to expose much more. Autonomous learning is important than ever.

Lunchtime. The visitation at the canteen is used for a lunch. Fish, clots or pasta – each for just 2.80 €
After lunch we visited the labs. At this we discussed about our “Jugend forscht”-Project.

Finally we performed a large literature research in the science-library oft the institute. Sought was the English original-literature of the topic “polyphones as Influenza A Neuraminidase-inhibitor”.

At about 6 o clock we arrived back in Hanau.
The cooperation with the department of biochemistry will build out in the next years.

Training of methods (TOM): Thin Layer Chromatography

 | 2006-11-30

Labday 30.11.2006

Wahlalternative
tlc_hes_061130.jpgToday, the BCSi-team will explore Thin Layer Chromatography
TLC is an important and cheap method to screen substances by quantity and quality.
After extraction and partial purifiation of pholyphenols from orange skin (see soxhlet extraction paper (Methoden Soxhlet Extraktion) and enrichment of hesperidine, we work an a method to optimize the screening assays.
Today, our task wasn't only to select different TLC basic materials like silica gel but also to optimzie the sample application and to test different sovent flux.

Isolation und chemically modification of Flavonoids /Polyphenolic carbonacids and their use als Influenza A Neuraminidase-Inhibitor

Wahlalternative

virus.jpgWithin our primary goals we will isolate different natural compounds (Flavonoids und Phenolcarbonic acids), if neccesary chemically modificate them and screen their binding affinity to Influenza A Neuraminidase A.

Aim: Charaterization of the IC50 on which the activity of Neuraminidase A will be reduced by half.
